WHAT IS THE HAVEN?
The Haven of Rest Ministries was established in 1956 as The Haven of Rest Rescue Mission by
Rev. Don and Wilma Chalfant to provide meals, shelter and spiritual comfort to homeless men in
the Battle Creek area. Since that time The Haven has grown to offer many innovative life-skills
programs such as long-term adult foster care for low income mentally or physically disabled men,
Inasmuch House, an emergency shelter for homeless women and children in 1986, the Calhoun
County Jail Ministry in the 1990’s and most recently transitional housing programs for homeless
recovering male substance abusers, and homeless families. For  50 years The Haven of Rest has
provided quality, dedicated service to those in need.
Our Mission
To proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ so that all may experience God’s love. Clothe, feed,
and shelter the homeless in the name of Christ. Disciple individuals to become spiritually,
physically, and emotionally functional, and able to live optimally within God’s kingdom and the
community.
Current Programs/Activities
The Haven serves homeless men over 18 years old, male substance abusers over 18 years old,
homeless women over 18 years old and their children, adult men with disabilities who need
assisted living, and inmates of the Calhoun County Jail. We provide emergency shelter, meals,
daily basic personal care needs, counseling, substance abuse recovery assistance, case
management, support groups, transitional housing, and referrals for medical care, legal
assistance, and employment. We also provide meals to the public several days a week. Each year
The Haven serves
80,000 meals to over 1,700 different homeless persons; daily we serve an
average of 35 men, and
40 women and children in our emergency shelters, 15 men in our adult
foster care unit, 26 men in our residential substance abuse treatment program and 5 to 10
families in our transitional housing program. We also serve approximately 45 meals a day to the
general public on weekends holidays and other days when the soup kitchen at the Salvation Army
is closed. The Haven also provides comfort and counseling to 600 inmates of the Calhoun County
Jail daily.
Our Goals and Objectives
1. Offering life-skills training such as money management, job readiness, tenant/landlord
relations, goal setting and time management.
2. Providing clients with positive life-changing habits, behaviors, attitudes, and thinking processes.
3. Networking with other agencies as referral sources for our clients for services we do not provide.
4. Teaching clients good decision making skills, and how to access community services when
needed so that eviction is not the ultimate outcome.
